ABOUT THE PAGE-WALKER:
The Page-Walker Arts and History Center is a municipial art center in Cary, North Carolina, which hosts various art exhibitions throughout the year. Usual public hours for the Page-Walker are Monday-Wednesday 10 am-9:30 pm; Thursday 10 am-5 pm. Friday 10 am-1 pm. Weekends are typically reserved for private functions. However, for the month of the art quilt shows, additional hours are typically added for afternoon and weekend viewing of the Art Quilts exhibition: The gallery at Page-Walker is a program of the Town of Cary Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department. "Art Quilts:
Encompassing the Past and Future"
Amy Stewart Winsor had taught
quilting at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center for several
years, when in late 1999 the facility director, Sara Maultsby,
invited Amy to curate an invitational art quilts show there in May
2000. Fifteen area quilt artists were invited to participate. "Art
Quilts: Encompassing the Past and Future" included 36 art quilts
and eight antique quilts.
Artists featured in 2000 included DD Blackerby, Hollis Chatelain, Marguerite Jay Gignoux, Jane Hall, Lynette Hallmark, Delores Hamilton, Ann Harwell, Abigail Livingood, Susie Mallard, Pamela Westin Missimer, Julie Mullin, Sonja Shogren, Susie Williams, Amy Stewart Winsor, and Sherri Wood. |

"Art Quilts:
Narrative Form"
Because of the success of the 2000 show, Amy was again asked to curate an art quilt show in May 2001. A national call for submissions went out, asking for quilts which told a story. "Art Quilts: Narrative Form" featured 34 art quilts by 22 artists. Eight North Carolina artists were featured in 2001. These included Marni Goldshlag, Delores Hamilton, Lyric Kinard, Susie Mallard, Julie Mullin, Jacqueline Nouveau, Susie Williams, and Amy Stewart Winsor. The 2001 show also included fourteen artists from eight other states, the District of Columbia, and two Canadian provinces. These included Mary Beth Bellah, Katharine Brainard, Susan Brittingham, Janet Ghio, Marcia Gragg, Deana Hartman, Verena Levine, Laura Lundrigan, Linda Pool, Suzanne Mouton Riggio, Thelma Smith, Paula Swett, Carol Taylor, and Patricia White. 2001, Special Exhibit at IQF
Quilting Arts Magazine sponsored "Narrative Form" as a special exhibit at the International Quilt Market and Festival Oct. 25-Nov. 4, 2001, and included 40 art quilts by 22 artists. Artists included Marguerite Jay Gignoux, Marni Goldshlag, Delores Hamilton, Ann Harwell, Lyric Kinard, Susie Mallard, Julie Mullin, Jacqueline Nouveau, Susie Williams, and Amy Stewart Winsor from North Carolina. Twelve artists (not from North Carolina) included Mary Beth Bellah, Katharine Brainard, Susan Brittingham, Linda Cantrell, Janet Ghio, Deana Hartman, Verena Levine, Laura Lundrigan, Linda Pool, Paula Swett, Carol Taylor, and Patricia White. |

"AMERICA: From the Heart" Karey Bresenhan, director of the International Quilt Festival, curated this exhibit of 300 quilts which were made in response to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and debuted at the 2001 International Quilt Festival. Amy was the local coordinator who arranged to bring the show to the Page-Walker. Karey invited 100 of the quilts to travel for 18 months. The Page-Walker was the first venue for the travelling show, Jan. 27-Mar. 16, 2002. Karey and her cousin Nancy O'Bryant Puentes, two of the co-founders of the International Quilt Association, travelled to Cary to attend the opening reception. "Art Quilts: Encrustations" Amy received over 200 entries of embellished quilts from over 100 artists for this exhibit, which May 2002. Fifty-seven embellished art quilts from 21 U.S. States, two Canadian provinces, and Belgium were on display. Work by fifty-two artists was represented, including 12 from North Carolina. Twelve artists from North Carolina include Jan Beasley, Nancy Cook, Beth Michalsky Friedman, JoAnn Gilbert, Ellen K. Guerrant, Lyric Kinard, Barbara Molnar, Nora Phillips, Mary Stone, Susie Williams, and Karen Zeher. An example of curator Amy Stewart Winsor's work was also included. Artists from other areas included Loretta Alvaredo, Kimberly A. Baxter, Carol Castaldi, Laura Cater-Woods, Laura Cater-Woods/Maxine Farkas/Marlene Glickman, Linda Colsh, Sharon Meares Commins, Janice Dawson, Nancy Eha, Ann Fahl, Karen Flamme, Patty Gamburg, Janet Ghio, Janelle Girod, Vickie Hallmark, Deana Hartman, and Janeene Herchold. Also Phil Jones, Sharon Kerry-Harlan, Pat Kroth, Ellen Lindner, Melinda E. Lowy, Laura Lundrigan, Judith Martin, Bonnie McCaffery, Ricki Moffat, Pat Owoc, Ruth Powers, Mary Ann Scarborough, Sally A.Sellers, Gail Settle, Susan Shie/James Acord, Helen Simon, Andi Stern, Suzanne Muse Taylor, Bonnie Tinling, Penelope D. Trudeau, and Jill Rumoshosky Werner. "Encrustations" has been chosen to be a special exhibit at the International Quilt Festival, Oct. 31-Nov. 3, 2002 in Houston, TX. "Quilting Arts Magazine" is planning to do a feature article on "Encrustations", planned for the Fall 2002 issue. Amy received permission from many of the "Encrustations" artists to use slides of their quilts in her lecture on embellishments, ("Whats All That Stuff on Your Quilt?")
